  • Duncan Heather - Principal

    • Duncan Heather is one of Europe's foremost garden designers, to-date having won five gold, one silver & one bronze medal and three best of show awards for his design work.

      Duncan sat on the SGD council from 2004-7 during which time he was responsible for producing the first industry standard fee scale as well as instigating the publishing of the first standard contract. He is co-author of the Garden Design Specification and is a regular lecturer for the Society of Garden Designers.

      He originally trained under, top international designer and author John Brookes and was subsequently offered a directorship in 1991, which he declined to concentrate on his own design practice in Henley-on-Thames.

      Today he lives in Oxfordshire where he both lectures and works, he travels extensively and undertakes a very wide range of projects around the world, from tiny courtyard gardens to large country estates.

  • Paul Ridley - Course Tutor
    • After a successful career in teaching, Paul decided to combine his passion for plans and his love of design, enrolling on a Post-Graduate Diploma in Residential Landscape Design which he completed, passing with Distinction. He now combines his teaching skills and design interests in his role as tutor for the College's innovative on-line course as well as running a highly successful design practice.

      Based in Oxford, Paul works on commissions both at home and abroad.

  • Susan Dunstall - Course Tutor
    • After a background in project management consultancy – essential skills to make sure projects are delivered to time and within budget, Susan qualified as a landscape designer with distinction.

      She set up her own design practice based near Burford in the Cotswolds and now designs gardens for private clients and undertakes commercial designs and planting schemes for hotels and schools working with Architects, Property developers and Landscape contractors.

  • John Heather - Construction and Professional Practice
    • Trained as an architect at the AA before joining a private practice and eventually working for a local authority. He is now a visiting lecturer at several design schools around the country and is widely respected as being the foremost expert in his field.

  • Hilary Thomas - Course Tutor
    • Hilary has always had a passion for plants and after studying horticulture and garden design she later went on to become Head of the School of Garden Design at Capel Manor College in North London. Whilst there she developed nationally recognised courses on garden and planting design. Graduates of these courses have won numerous medals at the RHS Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower shows, and are respected for their excellent plant knowledge and imaginative use of plants. Her book 'The Complete Planting Design Course' is a compilation of the notes used on the Planting Design Course at Capel Manor. Hilary now works as a free lance lecturer, designer and garden tour leader.
